Late, but that's pretty consistent with my experience of X8! Although I do like what Axl brings to the table in terms of gameplay. I think he's the kind of character you start to use more on subsequent playthroughs to keep things fresh.

I have downloaded Eastside Hockey Manager. I don't know when I will play it, but I'm letting you know that you aren't alone in owning it lol.

Ecco really IS weird, but it's such a charming game. The pace and atmosphere remind me of Flow, Flower, those sort of "poetic" games.

This is probably the first time in years that I have glanced at your Now Playing list and that hockey manager game wasn't in the top three.

No probs! And yeah, I can totally see it being fun with friends, kind of like Mario Party but a little bit more wacky and RNG-based. I hope y'all get some good laughs out of it!

To answer your question if it can be , there are at least several characters that have "scenarios" that involve little silly story bits in between games against NPCs, so if you want to count those as a kind of "Story Mode" (a la fighting game routes, maybe?) then yes, technically it can be beaten. They won't mean much to you without playing any of the shmup games that the various characters all come from, but they are amusing in a cute and silly sort of way. I think most of the unlockable stuff, iirc, comes from achievements and challenges though, which provide most of the incentive to keep playing the game, in my experience anyway.
