I'd definitely recommend actually playing Yakuza 1&2, because the real appeal of those games is being able to explore the city at your own pace and take in all the sights.

I feel like the Yakuza games are a 'spiritual successor to Streets of Rage and Shenmue'... and much like watching a LP of Shenmue wouldn't really convey the feeling of exploring a beautifully-made town and its atmosphere, neither would a LP of Yakuza 1&2. As long as you have a PS2 to play it on, I'd say it would be sily not to play them all, if the games appeal to you! ^^

I haven't played too far into Yakuza 2 yet (much like Yakuza 1, most of the town is blocked off until Chapter 4 or so), but from what I've played of it, I'd say it's absolutely worth it. ^.^

Even just in terms of style, it's wonderful! It seems to have it's own self-contained story, so even if future games in the series let you recap Yakuza 2's story, it's much better to experience it all yourself.

Then again, I tend to be the kind of person who prefers playing game series in order and enjoying the plot chronologically. ^.^; But, I really can't think of any reason -not- to play Yakuza 2, especially when it has more things to do (in terms of side content) than Yakuza 3 after all the cuts they made...

I was a huge fan of the series way back when 2 and 3 were out, but by the time I started playing 4, I was kind of tired of playing the exact same game... again.
