☆☆☆★★ Now I know why it's objectively bad: it's such a poor risk/reward ratio--not score-wise, but the actual exchanges themselves. Your ship can barely outmaneuver/peashoot regular enemies, let alone coping up with managing formations for score-that-amounts-to-1ups (same goes for barely useful power-ups). I'm betting the JPN version lends the player's ship a bit of an edge on speed... It just feels lighter. It takes me an average of 2 dozen tries to get through level 1 without dying.

Despite always drooling over the screenshots in mags at the time I never tried a game in the series. It looks (and specially sounds) fantastic. Equipment/levels really make a difference--feels rewarding, but encourages grinding all the same. Well, the twin trees are intact. Now gotta find a place for that key?

I'm so happy to finally play Boktai the way it was meant to be! I ADORE this series! It's really cool getting to experiment with the Solar Sensor for puzzles in real life! One of my favorite puzzles with it so far was one I didn't even put any real thought into with the ROM I used to play it before. There's a side dungeon with a small sealed-off cave where a Bok slowly moves towards a pit that it'll walk into and die. On the other side of the pit, there's a weight switch, and if sunlight hits the sensor, it'll create a light bridge across the pit! It'll also create a skylight, though which also instantly kills the Bok, so you've got to cover and uncover the sensor with the right timing to activate the switch with the Bok! Your reward for doing so is the 2nd tier of the Lance Frames, the Spear, and it's so much stronger than everything else you'll have by that point!

Aside from that, one thing in the game that has me giggling like an idiot is whenever a skylight is available and a few Sun-weak enemies are in the room with me! I knock on the wall where the skylight is, cover the sensor, lure everything there, and then uncover and watch everything instantly die! It's super fun! If you ever get to play any of the GBA entries physically, absolutely do so! I'm loving it to bits! The side dungeons are the perfect length for quick bits of exposure to the sun if that's a concern, and the game's pacing is still as great as ever!
