I do remember when the game first came out that people were amazed that it looked like a PS2 game. Personally, I always loved the look of the Disgaea games, so that never bothered me much. I also do like the tongue in cheek and wink the game does to the gaming/anime industries and gamers themselves. It's all kind of funny and I like that they can poke fun of them because they know their audience so well.
The changes you mentioned to the game itself are pretty different compared to the PS2 games. Weapon Masteries and Elemental Weaknesses is hard not to notice once they are not there. I kind of miss the Weaknesses cause I would have like a Fire Mage and I would go after any character that had weakness to Fire for an easy kill.
But, like I said, it has been fun and I do love that I'm playing a Disgaea game again. It will be slow going, but my hope is to beat sometime in the Fall/Winter.
